Self-Talk—The Battlefield of Our Mind

What have you been thinking about lately? Has it been positive or negative? Have you been putting yourself down in your own mind? Are your thoughts self-defeating or do your thoughts agree with what Scripture says about you?

Sometimes I think we’re not even aware of the self-talk we have going on inside our heads, but it’s important that we become aware of it and change anything that doesn’t align with what God says about us.

Reading the Bible

As believers, there are some basic truths we need to mull over on a regular basis, until they sink into the very core of our belief system. We need to be sure of our new identity in Christ, given to us when we accepted Him as our Savior.

*If you haven’t yet asked Jesus into your heart and life, but would like to, follow the simple prayer at the end, then study God’s Word (you can start with the Scriptures listed in this post) to learn about who you have now become as a child of the Most High God.

There is power in the spoken word (think about how God created the heavens and the earth) and saying the following phrases out loud to yourself can help combat negative thoughts that may be going through your mind.

James 3:4-6 (MSG)
‘A word out of your mouth may seem of no account, but it can accomplish nearly anything—or destroy it! It only takes a spark, remember, to set off a forest fire. A careless or wrongly placed word out of your mouth can do that. By our speech we can ruin the world, turn harmony to chaos, throw mud on a reputation, send the whole world up in smoke and go up in smoke with it, smoke right from the pit of hell.’

We don’t need to let the devil win in the battleground of our minds.

1 Peter 5:8 (CEV)
Be on your guard and stay awake. Your enemy, the devil, is like a roaring lion, sneaking around to find someone to attack.

If you suffer with self-doubt, shame issues, and poor self-esteem, it is especially important to practice saying the following out loud to yourself on a daily basis (or many times a day, if necessary).

Repeat after me:

  • I was known by my Creator before He formed me,
  • I was skillfully woven together in my mother’s womb,
  • I was planned by God, to be in this place at this time,
  • I am a child of the living God, I was chosen by God to be adopted into His family,
  • I was created with purpose,
  • I am extravagantly loved by God,
  • God knows everything I think, say, and do before I think, say, or do it, and He still loves me!
  • I am a special, unique, one of a kind creation; there is no one else exactly like me,
  • I am wanted by God,
  • I am no accident—nothing about me is a mistake!
  • I am valuable; I am God’s treasure and of great worth in His sight,
  • I am acceptable and accepted just as I am,
  • I am significant in God’s sight,
  • I have been made right with God and now suffer no condemnation from God,
  • my past has been forgiven completely, therefore I’m no longer defined by my past mistakes,
  • I have been given a fresh start as a new creation with a new identity in Christ,
  • I have the mind of Christ,
  • I belong to God and my body is His temple for the indwelling Holy Spirit,
  • I have unique talents and abilities that are gifts from God. I will not bury them, but I will use them to benefit others and bring glory to God,
  • I am needed—I have my own place and function in the body of Christ and the body is incomplete without me,
  • I am important because the gifts I have been given complement the gifts in others,
  • I have everything I need to fulfill God’s purpose for my life,
  • I am guided and empowered by the Holy Spirit.

Here’s some of the Scriptures to back up what you’ve just read:

Psalms 139:1-6  (NLT)
¹O Lord, you have examined my heart
and know everything about me.
²You know when I sit down or stand up.
You know my thoughts even when I’m far away.
³You see me when I travel
and when I rest at home.
You know everything I do.
⁴You know what I am going to say
even before I say it, Lord.
⁵You go before me and follow me.
You place your hand of blessing on my head.
⁶Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too great for me to understand!

Psalms 139:13-17 (NLT)
13You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body
and knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex!
Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.
15You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion,
as I was woven together in the dark of the womb.
16You saw me before I was born.
Every day of my life was recorded in your book.
Every moment was laid out
before a single day had passed.
17How precious are your thoughts about me, O God.
They cannot be numbered!

Ephesians 2:10 (NLT)
‘For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us to do long ago.’

Philippians 4:13 (NLT)
‘For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength. ‘

1 Corinthians 12:7,12,25,27 (NLT)
‘⁷A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.’
‘¹²The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ.’
‘²⁵This makes for harmony among the members, so that all the members care for each other. ‘
‘²⁷All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it.’

Matthew 13:44-46 (NLT)
“⁴⁴The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure that a man discovered hidden in a field. In his excitement, he hid it again and sold everything he owned to get enough money to buy the field.
⁴⁵Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant on the lookout for choice pearls. ⁴⁶When he discovered a pearl of great value, he sold everything he owned and bought it!”

In this parable, the man and the merchant represent God and we are the treasure, the pearl of great value! He gave everything—even His own Son—so that we could spend eternity in heaven with Him!

1 John 4:9-10 (NCV)
‘⁹This is how God showed his love to us: He sent his one and only Son into the world so that we could have life through him. ¹⁰This is what real love is: It is not our love for God; it is God’s love for us. He sent his Son to die in our place to take away our sins.’

Ephesians 1:4-5,11 (NLT)
‘⁴Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. ⁵God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.
¹¹Furthermore, because we are united with Christ, we have received an inheritance from God, for he chose us in advance, and he makes everything work out according to his plan.’

Titus 3:4-7 (NLT)
‘⁴But— When God our Savior revealed his kindness and love, ⁵he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit. ⁶He generously poured out the Spirit upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior. ⁷Because of his grace he made us right in his sight and gave us confidence that we will inherit eternal life.’

Romans 8:38-39 (NLT)
‘³⁸And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. ³⁹No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.’

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (ERV)
‘¹⁹You should know that your body is a temple for the Holy Spirit that you received from God and that lives in you. You don’t own yourselves. ²⁰God paid a very high price to make you his. So honor God with your body.’

Romans 5:9 (NLT)
‘And since we have been made right in God’s sight by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from God’s condemnation.’

1 John 2:27 (NIRV)
But you have received the Holy Spirit from God. He continues to live in you. So you don’t need anyone to teach you. God’s Spirit teaches you about everything. What he says is true. He doesn’t lie. Remain joined to Christ, just as you have been taught by the Spirit.

1 Corinthians 2:10,12,14 (NLT)
10But it was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us God’s deep secrets. ¹²And we have received God’s Spirit (not the world’s spirit), so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us. ¹⁴But people who aren’t spiritual can’t receive these truths from God’s Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them and they can’t understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means.’

1 Corinthians 2:16 (NET)
For who has known the mind of the Lord, so as to advise him? But we have the mind of Christ.

*If you would like to receive Jesus as your Savior, pray something like this:

Lord Jesus, I believe You are God’s One True Son. I believe You came to earth, died on the cross to pay for my sins, and after the third day you rose again, and are now seated at the right hand of God. Please forgive me for everything I’ve done wrong. Come into my heart and take over my life through the power of your Holy Spirit. Help me to love You and live for You above everything else. Thank you Jesus!

        • Thank you for the prayers. I’m not sure when I’m coming back to regular posting yet. There’s parts about it I miss, but it is less stressful not having to come up with a weekly post. I’m not one for a lot of words, so it was hard for me at times. That’s also where some of the struggle comes from in writing a book. Sometimes, I feel empty/blank 🙁

          • No pressure Sis. Take your time. Blogging does take a lot. Writing, reading other posts and commenting all goes into hours. I totally get it. I am praying for you Sis. If you are struggling with words, it could be that God wants you to focus on Him more in this season and as you do, He will open your heart and mind to what exactly He wants you to write about. I applaud you guys writing books. I struggle with blogging and I can’t imagine how you guys cope with this and writing as well. I pray for more of God’s grace for you.

            • Thank you for that insight—you’re probably right. Besides, it never hurts to spend more time focusing on God anyway, no matter what the circumstances are.
You’re posts are always insightful and you manage to get them out on a frequent basis, so I would never have guessed you struggle with blogging.
Thank you for your continued prayers—much appreciated!

                • Happy New Year to you, too! 🎉 I trust you had a good Christmas and will stay safe through the New Year’s celebrations.
Thanks for checking on me. I’ve been taking a total break from writing. I haven’t written anything for a couple of months, and although it’s freeing in a sense, there’s always this niggling in the back of my mind that if God called me to write (and yes, I even question that now), why do I find it so hard? I’m disappointed, once again, that I didn’t meet my self-imposed deadline, and discouraged, wondering why I have no ideas, no words, and struggle to make even a little forward movement. I’m trying not to compare myself to others, but feel like I’ve failed—myself, my readers, and God. 😥
I’m just now starting back to writing a few words. My husband reminds me that when it’s time, it will happen, and that God’s timing is often not in line with when and how we’d like things to pan out. He says that maybe God’s just preparing the hearts of those who will read my story and when they’re ready, all the plot holes the story has now will be filled in and words will flow smoothly.
Sorry for the rant, but thanks for letting me pour out my heart 💔

                  • (((Hugs))) Mia. You don’t need to apologise. Thanks for pouring your heart out. I can relate with the frustration that comes with us not meeting our deadlines. I am in agreement with what your husband said. God’s timing and ours are different. He makes all things beautiful in it’s time. I will be praying for you. That God will open your eyes to see the bigger picture so you can understand where this season fits into the jigsaw puzzle of your life. I will be praying against the spirit of discouragement and self doubt.
I’m really sorry to know you are feeling this way.

  1. Thank you allowing God to use you and his word accomplish all that it is intended to do. My view is different from how God’s see me…and the devil will surely lie about who I am…Glory be to God in the name of Jesus, for this confirmation…

    • I’m glad this spoke to you. God is good and the devil is a liar! The devil will do all he can to derail us from God’s plan for our lives and make us ineffective as witnesses for Christ by getting us to believe the lies he tells us. With daily confirmation of who we are in God’s eyes, we can break free of the devil’s hold on our mind. As Joyce Meyer says, our mind is a battleground, and we need to do whatever we can to not let the devil win in our thoughts, because that’s where it all begins. Our thoughts control our attitudes, words, and actions. God bless you as you work to change your view of yourself and align it with how God sees you.

  3. Thank you for sharing this! This is exactly where God brought me in my process of self-love. I have been practicing this lately and i truly start to begin to see the difference in my life. Words have so much power, the bible says we reap what we sow right? By talking positive we will start to feel that way evantually. I wrote about this myself lately as well. I will leave the link to my blog if you are interested in reading my point of view. Thank you for blessing me 🙂

    • Yes, words do have so much power, and that’s especially the case when it’s the Word of God. I’m glad you were blessed by reading these affirmations! God is good! ❤️
I definitely think it’s important to start saying these truths long before we may feel like they’re true about ourselves, but with time God will bring us to the point where we really believe them and assimilate them into our thinking more naturally. Then we’ll start acting from that mindset, too.
Thanks for stopping by and for sharing the link to your blog—I’d be happy to check it out 😊

  4. I like this Mia. Our mind is our battlefield. Have you heard the battlefield of the mind by Joyce Meyer? If not I suggest you read it. Very good read. It not only tells why the mind is our battlefield but also gives practical tips on how to combat this battle

    • Yes, I love Joyce Meyer! ❤️ She’s awesome! I have the audio version of her Battlefield of the Mind book as well as several others. Although I’ve listened to them several times already, it’s been several months since I last listened, so I’m going to have to let them play through again soon.😉
